Robotic kitchen recreates dishes by top chefs
It may not look like it, but in this London kitchen a master chef is at work.
Moley Robotics' fully-automated and integrated intelligent cooking robot is busily making chef Tim Anderson's crab and tomato soup.
Having watched and analysed how Anderson makes the dish, it's now replicating his movements down to the minute detail.
It's all part of London-based Moley Robotics' aim to revolutionise home cooking with the power of automation, allowing robotic versions of top chefs to craft dishes in kitchens around the world.
"Before this machine came into the market, nobody can understand that it's possible to build a machine which generally can cook any dish in the world, because it looks impossible before we are inventing this kitchen" says Mark Oleynik, the founder and CEO of Moley Robotics, who first came up with the idea in January 2014.
"Now, it's possible."
This is Moley's vision of a future robotic kitchen.
Its technology gives homeowners unlimited access to chefs and their recipes, which are then precisely recreated by the two-armed robot.
Budding chefs can even create their own recipes and share them with friends and family members online.
It uses artificial intelligence and a motion capture system to precisely mimic the actions of a master chef.
In the future, Moley envisages chefs will be able to "share and sell" their own recipes in a kind of "digital library".
But there is one draw back - while the robotic kitchen's arms closely mimic those of a chef, it certainly can't taste or test the food.
That means it can't check to see if more seasoning is required and add a little salt or pepper.
Oleynik says that's not an issue, as the robot follows recipes down to minute detail, meaning it will never make a mistake.
Moley Robotics hopes to launch its first consumer model prototype by next year.
Currently, the technology can't create every dish in the world and it's a little messy.
The ingredients must be prepared and then delicately placed in the correct location so the robotic arms "know" where they are.
It's now busily crafting a white and dark crab meat soup - adding garlic, cream, tomatoes, a touch of truffle oil and tarragon. The whole cooking process takes around 25 minutes.
This prototype took around 12 months of development to create.
But to do that, its now launching a crowd-funding campaign on website 'Seedrs' with the aim of raising one million British pounds (approx. 1.24 million USD) to continue development and eventual production of the technology.
